Landers Chevrolet of Norman Helps Tornado Victims

April 14th, 2025 by

In April of 2024, an EF-3-rated tornado hit the small town of Sulphur, Oklahoma. The tornado flattened 70 buildings in the area.

Shelly Courtney, a senior at Oklahoma University, was visiting Sulphur the night the tornado hit. Both her father’s truck and her car were destroyed and needed replacement, which is how they came to Chevrolet of Norman.

“During the sales process, they mentioned they were from Sulphur,” said Kody Walker, Sales Consultant. “Some of my fiancée’s family live there so I spend a lot of time there. It hit close to home; we connected over that.”

After talking with them about the town and their experience, Walker learned their house had been damaged along with their vehicles. After bringing up the situation to the Finance Manager, J.T. Moore, and General Manager Shawn Groff, they all agreed to give them a gift card to help them get back on their feet.

“Our GM talks about rolling out the red carpet as much as possible, not just selling cars but an experience,” said Walker. “People remember how they’re treated and establishing that type of positive emotional connection has incredible mileage.” While the family was in the finance office, Groff went out to get a gift card, and they presented it to them when they were done.

“When we gave them the gift card, her dad Cleve lit up and was very thankful. He immediately let Shelly have the gift card,” said Walker. “Nothing can replace what they lost but I think it meant a lot to them.”

“I was genuinely surprised to receive anything other than my car,” said Courtney. “I couldn’t be more thankful to the people at Landers for helping me and my father after such a difficult time.”

This is one way Luther dealerships are Driven to Serve our guests. There are countless ways to find these opportunities but sometimes the best way is the most obvious.

“The easiest way to find these opportunities is just listening to customers and helping when they need it,” said Moore. “Small gestures go a long way. It will make someone’s day when they need it most.”
